Cosmetic Procedures

At Johnson Dermatology, we offer a variety of procedures to enhance the natural beauty of the skin.   As dermatologists, we are experts in treating the skin. The skin is our organ of specialty. We can determine the right products to use, treat any illness of the skin or enhance the natural beauty of the skin with cosmetic procedures. We are aware that many people offer procedures aimed at the skin. You can be assured that we are highly trained to offer you the best possible care.  We are not only trained in these procedures but also able to train others.  Dr. Sandy Johnson was the director of the dermatology cosmetic training program at UAMS from 2000-2004. During that time, she instructed the residents and other physicians with many cosmetic procedures including chemical peels, sclerotherapy, laser therapy, intense pulsed light, and soft tissue fillers. Some of the procedures offered include:

Botox® Cosmetic

Botox, Restylane, Laser Hair Reduction, Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, Sclerotherapy

Years of squinting and frowning can leave deep wrinkles. Dr Johnson can quickly and safely inject BOTOX® Cosmetic during an office visit to diminish these wrinkles and lines that create an angry or sad look and detract from a pleasant facial appearance. Since there is no way to make the undesirable facial expression, the lines gradually smooth out from disuse, and new creases are prevented from forming. Other muscles such as those needed to raise the eyebrows are not affected, so a natural expression is maintained. For optimal results BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy may be used in combination with other cosmetic skin procedures such as chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and dermal fillers. Combination therapy also can help prevent the formation of new lines and wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic is less useful for the smile lines around the mouth because muscle action in this area is needed for important functions such as eating and talking. BOTOX® Cosmetic takes effect about 3 to 7 days after treatment. The improvement generally lasts about 3 to 4 months; the effect gradually fades as muscle action returns. With repeated treatments, atrophy (thinning) of the muscle may occur. This usually produces longer-lasting results.  Therefore, BOTOX® Cosmetic is not just a treatment but a way to prevent further wrinkling.  Because of this, we encourage regular treatments. Lasers

We offer the latest laser technology combined with experience. We offer Candela lasers  www.candelalaser.com .  The VBeam Perfecta offers the most advanced pulsed dye technology and may be utilized for true skin rejuvenation, redness, acne, pigmentation, brown spots, rosacea, veins, wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, psoriasis, hemangiomas, and other skin conditions. Dr. Sandy has used the pulsed dye laser since 1998 which provides her the aptitude to provide high quality services tailored to meet patient needs. The GentleYAG complements our laser practice by treating purple spots, vessels, wrinkles, skin tightening, and the always bothersome excess hair.

Chemical Peels

Johnson Dermatology offers medical grade chemical peels to improve surface irregularities, texture changes, pigmentary changes, photodamage, scarring and other skin changes. Dr. Johnson prefers to perform a TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel which is the gold standard of most chemical peels. Chemical peels provide a relatively inexpensive way to achieve desired improvement of superficial imperfections.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a widely used nonsurgical procedure that eliminates spider and varicose veins. Using an ultrafine needle, we inject a sclerosing agent into the vein, which will cause them to dissolve and eventually disappear.

Patients undergoing sclerotherapy generally experience very little discomfort and can return to work that same day. Often used as an alternative to surgery, sclerotherapy can reduce or eliminate spider and varicose veins in 1-6 treatments, depending upon the extent of the problem and patient compliance following the procedure.

To help lessen the chance for bruising and to ensure the treated veins remain closed, we may have you wear heavy-duty support stockings for a short time after treatment. There is the possibility of recurrence of the veins if there is essentially a problem with the venous system.

Soft Tissue Fillers

Soft tissue fillers are flexible substances that can be injected into the skin to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, plump lips, fill hollow cheeks, repair various facial imperfections, improve scars, and elevate deep folds. The result is a smoother, more youthful appearance with minimum "downtime" and maximum safety. A filler substance is injected beneath the surface of the skin where it corrects the line or wrinkle by temporarily plumping and smoothing out the skin depression. Most fillers replace the host components of the skin: collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin. radiesse, soft tissue fillers, collagen, hyaluronic acid, elastin. Some fillers also can stimulate production of collagen. We offer a variety of "filler" choices. Dr. Sandy usually prefers Prevelle Silk for short term correction or to "try out" a filler, Juvederm for lips and some other areas and Radiesse for long lasting corrections.
